Example 1

Find the volume of the prisms pictured. All measurements are in centimetres.

aRectangular prism; sides labelled 2 cm, 4 cm, 6 cm

Solution

\begin{align}\text{Volume}\ &= lwh\\\\ &= 6 × 4 × 2\\\\ &= 48\ \text{cm}^3\end{align}

bRectangular prism; sides labelled 2 cm, 8 cm, 20 cm

Solution

\begin{align}\text{Volume}\ &= lwh\\\\ &= 20 × 8 × 2\\\\ &= 320\ \text{cm}^3\end{align}

Example 2

The volume of a rectangular prism is 144 m³. The area of the base is 36 m². What is the height of the prism?

Solution

\begin{align} V &= Ah\\\\ \text{Hence}\ h &=\dfrac{V}{A}\\\\ &=\dfrac{144}{36}\\\\ &= 4\ \text{m}\end{align}
